Chapter 10

Troy sat on the couch next to Gary at the Martin's house. Connie and Abby were preparing dinner in the kitchen but not totally out of earshot.

Troy leaned over and spoke very softly, approaching a whisper even. "Gary, could we go outside and discuss something of a private nature?"

"Private?"

Troy used his head as a pointing advice to direct Gary’s attention to the kitchen.

"Ah, OK." Gary shrugged and got up. The two went outside and sat on the porch.

"If you've brought me out here to ask for my daughter's hand in marriage, we don't need all this drama. You got it. Can we go back in now? My beer’s getting warm."

"Thanks, but that was not the topic of discussion. And after I tell you what's on my heart, you probably will take back your permission. I just hope you can receive this word in the spirit it's given."

Gary registered a look of surprise, but he was not taken aback sufficiently to damper his humor. "Ooh. Do we need some appropriate mood music here?"

"I've come to really love your daughter and your wife too."

"My wife? Oh, so you want to marry my wife instead of my daughter? I might not give you permission for that one."

Troy, heaven bent on accomplishing his objective, ignored the levity of the retort. "They both deserve a good father and a good husband."

"Yes, they do."

"They're being cheated. You aren't living up to the billing. On top of that, you're cheating yourself."

This time Gary’s natural humor reflex stayed inactive. "Unbelievable! Young whippersnapper comes over to my house to eat the meat my labor provided and he takes a pot shot at my manhood. Wow!"

"Sorry. I’m certainly not trying to belittle you. Maybe I’m reading the situation wrong, but I feel you’re not the kind of guy who responds to praise, but you do to a challenge. I fully intend on marrying Abby at some point, and we will have children. I would love for them to have a fully functioning grandfather who I could trust to leave them with for an extended period of time. If you think I’m going to let them hang around a beer chugging, potty mouthed grandfather who teaches them to undermine my influence, you’d be sadly mistaken."

"You certainly are issuing a full blown challenge. Throwing down the iron glove I’d say. Fully functioning? You make it sound like I'm handicapped or something. What does Mr. Perfect want me to do to pass muster?"

"It’s not me you need to please. Abby says that you were a believer. Looks to me like you've gone AWOL. You need to be the spiritual leader of your family and make your home a place where the Holy Spirit resides."

"You want me to become a saint–like you?"

Troy shook his head. "Not like me. Like Jesus. He's our role model. Honestly, it looks to me like your role model is Homer Simpson. And your belly is your God."

"Now you're hitting below the belt. And I'm just about ready to put my gloves on and get in the ring with you.
